Belarus president speaks against high-density housing, unjustified tree felling

MINSK, 3 October (BelTA) – No more houses should be built in high-density residential estates. Trees in population centers should not be felled without a good reason. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko gave the relevant instructions during the government conference held on 3 October to discuss the latest revision of the Housing Code and ways to improve the legislation on reducing the number of vacant and decrepit houses, BelTA has learned.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, mass media have lately reported a number of scandals in many places across the country where people complain about unjustified tree felling. The reports indicate that trees are felled to make space for new houses. Alexander Lukashenko gave instructions to avoid raising the public anger and find other ways to accomplish the housing construction plans.

Alexander Lukashenko was also unhappy about reports of high-rise construction in direct vicinity of existing residential buildings.

The head of state also noted that century-old trees are felled in Minsk along a street in the vicinity of the Belarusian tractor manufacturer MTZ for the sake of laying down communications.

Alexander Lukashenko was displeased with the poor excuses the Minsk city administration uses to implement such plans.

According to Alexander Lukashenko, felling mature trees and promising to replace them with new saplings is not a good idea. The practice squanders resources and has to stop, the head of state said.

“I am not going to repeat myself on the matter. You have to pay attention to people's needs. Otherwise, we will go numb to the needs of the people like some of our neighbors already have,” concluded the Belarusian leader.
