Belarus President attending EEU summit in Astana

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) – Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is taking part in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Astana, BelTA has learned.

Partaking in the summit apart from the Belarusian leader are the Presidents of Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia. The one-on-one meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council is underway.

Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev addressed the participants of the meeting with a welcoming speech. He extended greetings on the occasion of the second anniversary of signing the EEU Treaty and took note of the need to discuss the most important issues concerning the further development of the union. “The EEU activity is gaining pace. Today we have gathered to discuss and decide on important issues of the activity of the economic association. The agenda includes 14 issues,” said Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Chairman of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission Tigran Sargsyan noted for his part that Kyrgyzstan added an extra issue to the agenda of the summit. “Our Kyrgyz counterparts addressed us with a proposal on the early termination of the powers of a member of the Board of the Eurasian Economic Commission and the appointment of a new one. The issue should be included into the agenda,” he said.

Belarus is particularly interested in discussing the concept of the development of the common markets of gas, oil, and oil products in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). The agenda of the meeting also comprises the issues related to development of the EEU economic relations with third countries and key integration associations.

The heads of state will talk over the main guidelines of the macroeconomic policy of the EEU member states for 2016-2017 and the implementation of the main areas in the EEU international activity.

A number of international documents will be signed at the end of the meeting.
