Ukraine thanks Belarus for providing negotiation platform

BREST, 24 June (BelTA) – Ukraine is grateful to Belarus for providing a negotiation platform. Consul of Ukraine in Brest Oleg Mysyk made the statement during the press conference held on 24 June on the occasion of the 20th anniversary since Ukraine's modern constitution was adopted, BelTA has learned.

Oleg Mysyk said: “Ukrainians feel support in the world, particularly in Belarus. We are deeply grateful to Belarus for providing us with a negotiation platform. Belarus was the one to initiate the process of providing such a platform to the Normandy Four as well as platforms for monthly talks on fulfilling the Minsk agreements. We are grateful to the Belarus president for the openness and boldness he has demonstrated with regard to Ukraine, with regard to resolving this conflict.”

The Consul of Ukraine in Brest noted that negotiations are in progress and results have already been achieved. “The very meeting of people, moreover, top-ranking people, who have the authority to hold negotiations, already gives some results. They say that a little can go a long way. If we talk about problems all the time while documents have been signed, there will be progress. It may be difficult, painful at times but we will get things done. No combat operations on a massive scale have been staged since last year. Prisoners of war are exchanged through great efforts thanks to the Minsk agreements. This is why certainly there is an effect,” noted the diplomat.

The possibility of arranging another Normandy Four meeting is under consideration for the sake of stepping up efforts aimed at fulfilling the Minsk agreements. The leaders of France, Ukraine, Germany, and Russia may meet in Paris soon. “Preparations are afoot for the Normandy Four to convene again. The existing agreement may be adjusted. New problems, a new vision of the situation may emerge,” added Oleg Mysyk.

The Ukrainian consul's area of responsibility includes Brest Oblast and Grodno Oblast. Over 23,000 Ukrainians have moved here after the events in Ukraine's southeast. Some of them have returned to their native country.

Ukraine celebrates Constitution Day on 28 June. In accordance with the tradition, flowers will be laid at Taras Shevchenko's monument in Brest on that day.
