MINSK, 10 October (BelTA) - Ukraine is against the participation of CIS observers in monitoring the upcoming presidential election in 2019, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev told the media in Minsk on 10 October, BelTA has learned.
“We received an official notification from Ukraine. The country does not want CIS observers to participate in the election monitoring. Accordingly, we are unlikely to attend the election,” Sergei Lebedev said.
However, Sergei Lebedev did not rule out that Ukraine will still invite CIS observers. "We received an invitation to monitor the parliamentary election in Moldova on 24 February 2019. The CIS observation mission will monitor the process. Moldova also invited observers from the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly. As for Ukraine, the election campaign is leaving its imprint on the political situation. It is hard for me to say what actions Ukraine will take. But we hope that it will not rush out of the CIS,” Sergei Lebedev noted.
