Shchetkina: Belarusian women ready to join efforts to achieve SDGs

MINSK, 21 September (BelTA) – Women in Belarus are ready to take an active part in all processes to achieve sustainable development, Vice Speaker of the Council of the Republic, head of the Belarusian Union of Women Marianna Shchetkina said on the sidelines of the Second Eurasian Women's Forum, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of the Belarusian parliament.

Marianna Shchetkina suggested that the Eurasian Economic Commission consider a possibility to develop and implement a project to achieve sustainability in the EAEU, with gender policy being one of the priorities of such a project. “Women's solidarity and team spirit are a great driving force promoting development and prosperity. We want peace and development, which means that we should stay united. Women in Belarus are ready to take an active part in all processes aimed to achieve progress and sustainable development,” she said.

Speaking at the plenary session of the forum, the head of the Belarusian Union of Women informed the participants about the activities of the union and the work done in Belarus to achieve sustainable development goals. She emphasized the role of the parliamentary dimension in fulfilling national and global development goals. “Women are drivers of the sustainable development process. Our global goals and interests are beyond politics; our priorities are sustainability and well-being for current and future generations,” Marianna Shchetkina said.

She upheld the proposal to set up a Eurasian women's association that would bring together regional female leaders from all walks of life to engage in a dialogue within the framework of the Eurasian space.

On the sidelines of the forum Marianna Shchetkina held a series of one-on-one meetings. In particular, she met with Chair of the Committee for International Relations, Defense and Security of Kazakhstan's Senate Dariga Nazarbayeva. The parties expressed interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation, including interparliamentary contacts. They discussed a possibility to expand trade and economic cooperation and scale up bilateral trade. A special focus was placed on promotion of digital economy and public-private partnership.
