MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) – Russia will assume the CIS chairmanship on 1 January 2017, CIS Executive Secretary, Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee Sergei Lebedev said following the meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council, BelTA has learned.
“On 1 January the Russian Federation will assume the chairmanship in the CIS. Today, the members of the delegations wished success to the representatives of Russia, the chairman of the Russian government Dmitry Medvedev,” Sergei Lebedev said.
According to him, the CIS countries have expressed the hope that Russia's chairmanship will give a new impetus to the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Kyrgyzstan presides over the CIS in 2016.
