OSCE representative in Minsk names ceasefire crucial to advancing peace process in Ukraine

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) – Preserving the ceasefire regime in the conflict zone in Ukraine is crucial to advancing the peace process, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the OSCE's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, on 26 April.

“Events of 23 April prove that security matters in the conflict zone and primarily the meticulous and full observance of the ceasefire regime, the withdrawal of heavy weapons, and mine clearance are crucial to promoting the peace process. The trilateral contact group calls for it all the time,” said Martin Sajdik. In particular, statements to that effect were made on 29 March and 12 April.

One of the employees of the OSCE special monitoring mission died in the conflict zone in Ukraine's east on 23 April and another two were injured. Due to the tragic events no session of the contact group's subgroup on security has been held this week. Nevertheless, the group coordinator, head of the OSCE special monitoring mission in Ukraine Ertugrul Apakan got in touch with the trilateral contact group on Ukraine via video conference. Members of the trilateral contact group on Ukraine offered their condolence to Ertugrul Apakan, friends and the family of the dead and wished speedy recovery to the injured. After that members of the trilateral contact group on Ukraine were informed in detail about the incident and confirmed that the subgroup on security will resume work soon.
