Next round of talks on Ukraine in Minsk scheduled for 29 June

MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) – The next round of talks on Ukraine will take place in Minsk on 29 June, BelTA learned from Martin Sajdik, the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office's special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, on 15 June.

Martin Sajdik explained the subgroup on security affairs discussed ceasefire violations during the meeting on 15 June. Including firing at populated areas near Donetsk on 8 June. “Preliminary investigations into the matter have been carried out already. The relevant work will continue,” assured the OSCE representative.

The subgroup's coordinator Ertugrul Apakan called upon the conflicting parties to continue investigating all incidents and threats aimed against personnel of the OSCE's special monitoring mission. Firing at the observers is a case in point. On 15 June the subgroup on security affairs also discussed the problem of separating the warring sides along the conflict line. The subgroup's coordinator mentioned the positive spirit that was present during the discussions. Martin Sajdik noted that the coordinator hopes that real results will be achieved during the next meeting, that, in particular, the results will make the everyday life of civilians easier.

The operation of conflict line checkpoints was also discussed on 15 June. These matters were in focus of discussions in the subgroup on humanitarian affairs. Among other things the subgroup's coordinator Toni Frisch suggested keeping the checkpoints open 24/7. “All the sides agreed that observing the ceasefire is the key condition for the unhindered operation of the checkpoints,” said the OSCE special representative. Martin Sajdik also stated that despite best efforts no progress had been made on POW exchange. He said the sides should demonstrate more political will for resolving the problem, primarily the release of the sick and the injured.

The subgroup on economic affairs traditionally discussed the restoration of water supply and the restoration of the railway infrastructure as well as the payment of pensions. “There are difficulties with restoring the united railway system. There is a very important issue. It concerns various social rights of workers,” said Martin Sajdik.

The subgroup on political affairs continued discussing the modality of organization of municipal elections in certain parts of Donetsk Oblast and Lugansk Oblast. In particular, the role of political parties was in focus. The sides also exchanged opinions about amnesty.
