Makei urges international community to unite efforts against terrorism

MINSK, 9 October (BelTA) – Belarus upholds the establishment of a single counterterrorism front and consolidation of efforts of the UN, OSCE, CSTO, CIS and other organizations dealing with this problem, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said at the opening of the international high-level conference “Preventing and Countering Terrorism in the Digital Age" on 9 October, BelTA has learned.

“We advocate a comprehensive approach based on observing the principles of international law without double standards. Fragmentation of counterterrorism efforts into coalitions that pursue their own political ends, involvement of non-state actors, and support for some terrorist organizations in their fight against other terrorist groups will only exacerbate the threat of terrorism and extremism. Therefore, we support the establishment of a single counterterrorism front and consolidation of efforts of the UN, OSCE, CSTO, CIS and other organizations dealing with this matter,” Vladimir Makei said.

Belarus welcomes the signing of the Code of Conduct for the Achievement of a Terrorism-Free World in New York in September this year.

“It is particularly symbolic for us that the ongoing conference has become the first major international event after the UN and the OSCE signed the Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation in supporting international efforts related to preventing and countering terrorism in Vienna last week. We hope that this conference will help make a meaningful and practical contribution to implementing this memorandum, boost the synergy of action and raise the efficiency of international efforts to combat the threat of terrorism,” the minister added.
