Foreign diplomats favorably impressed with organization of elections in Belarus

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – The organization of elections in Belarus leaves favorable impressions, BelTA learned from foreign diplomats, who are authorized by the Central Election Commission of Belarus to observe elections to the municipal councils of deputies.

Venezuelan observers have been monitoring progress of the election campaign for several days. They have visited a number of polling stations. “The general impressions are good. Everything is very well organized,” stressed Ambassador of Venezuela to Belarus Jose Boggiano Pericchi. “All the information is very well presented. I can feel festive mood. It is important,” he added.

In turn, Attaché for Information, Education, and Culture with the U.S. Embassy in Belarus Elizabeth Lewis also mentioned good conditions at polling stations. She said she hoped that the voter turnout would be high.

The Belarusian election organization agency has authorized 46 employees of diplomatic missions in Belarus to observe the election campaign. Most of the observers have been sent by the embassies of Lithuania, Russia, and the USA. Some 35,000 domestic observers are also monitoring the elections.

Elections to municipal councils of deputies are in progress in Belarus today. All the 5,870 polling stations are operating in a routine manner. They will stay open till 20:00. Over 22,000 people stand as candidates, vying for slightly more than 18,000 seats in the local councils of deputies.
