Czech Republic regrets UK's vote to leave EU

MINSK, 30 June (BelTA) – The Czech Republic regrets the British vote to leave the EU, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs Lubomir Zaoralek told reporters on 30 June, BelTA has learned.

“We very much regret the decision of the British people who voted in the recent referendum to leave the European Union, because we support UK's membership in the EU. If the United Kingdom eventually breaks away from the union, we will stand for fairness in these relations and, at the same time, protect our interests because if a country leaves the EU, it cannot continue to enjoy the benefits of EU membership,” the diplomat noted.

The Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Czechia will not change its attitude to the EU as it views the union as the basis for its security and further development. “We cannot imagine ourselves outside this European project and will do our best to preserve it,” Lubomir Zaoralek said.

He said he was pleased to hear that Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has a similar position on the matter. “I fully support the opinion of the Belarusian leader who believes that the European Union is important for the Czech Republic and Belarus as well as for the whole Europe and, probably, for the entire world,” the diplomat stressed.
