Cuba thanks Belarus for support in international arena

MINSK, 19 October (BelTA) – Cuba is grateful to Belarus for the support in the international arena, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to Belarus Gerardo Suarez Alvarez said in a press conference on 19 October, BelTA has learned.

“Cuba will always see the Republic of Belarus as a kindred spirit. Our countries have established strong political, trade and economic relations at all levels,” Gerardo Suarez Alvarez noted.

He said that the solidarity of the international community with Cuba's demand to end the blockade was one of the factors that prompted the United States to change its policy with respect to Cuba and resume the diplomatic relations. However, there are still certain barriers to the commercial and economic relations, as the laws regulating these relations are still in force.

“Cuba demands an end to the US embargo which is the main impediment to the country's economic development and the growth of people's well-being. This is the severest, the most unfair and long-lasting system of unilateral sanctions that a country has ever suffered,” Gerardo Suarez Alvarez stressed.

The draft resolution calling for an end to the US economic, commercial and financial embargo on Cuba will be discussed at a session of the UN General Assembly on 26 October. Cuba has been submitting similar documents to the General Assembly for 25 years. The last draft resolution was supported by 193 states with just the United States and Israel voting against. In 1992, only 52 countries voted in support of Cuba.
