CIS to appoint head of its observation mission for Azerbaijan presidential elections

MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – The CIS plenipotentiary representatives will discuss the candidature of the head of the CIS observation mission for the elections of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 20 February, Chairman of the Executive Committee, Executive Secretary of the CIS Sergei Lebedev told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“One of the issues that came up recently is the candidature to the post of the CIS observation mission head in connection with the extraordinary elections of the President of Azerbaijan scheduled for 11 April. Today the CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiaries will discuss the candidatures,” Sergei Lebedev said.

There are plans to nominate Sergei Lebedev head of the CIS observation mission. “If this happens, I will accept this proposal with gratitude,” he said.

With regard to the local elections in Belarus, the CIS did not monitor them. According to Sergei Lebedev, it is an internal affair of Belarus. According to media reports, the elections were conducted in an orderly manner, at a high level. Sergei Lebedev is convinced that decent people were elected to the local councils.

At a session in Minsk the CIS permanent plenipotentiaries will study the issues to be included in the draft agenda of the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council, which will be held in Dushanbe in June 2018. They will also harmonize the draft agenda of the joint meeting of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiaries and the Commission for Economic Affairs at the CIS Economic Council.
