CEC suggests holding local elections in Belarus on 18 February 2018

MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) – Belarus' Central Election Commission suggests holding the elections to the local councils of deputies on 18 February 2018, CEC chairperson Lidia Yermoshina told BelTA.

She noted that initially the commission considered two dates, 11 February and 18 February. “If we set the date of the local elections for 11 February, then we will leave a huge part of the students out of this electoral event. This is the time of the winter break at universities, and students, according to the electoral law, may vote only at the place of studies,” Lidia Yermoshina said.

18 February falls into the period prescribed in the electoral code. This is the most likely date. If the elections are set at this date, then the electoral campaign should start no later than 18 November.

Lidia Yermoshina also noted that the final decision on the election day is taken by the head of state. A corresponding decree must be signed.
