Call for change in attitude towards documents adopted by CIS IPA

MINSK, 27 March (BelTA) – It is necessary to reconsider the attitude to the documents adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS IPA), Chairman of Belarus' Council of the Republic Mikhail Myasnikovich said at the solemn plenary meeting of the CIS IPA in Saint Petersburg on 27 March, BelTA has learned.

Mikhail Myasnikovich believes that the Commonwealth of Independent States founded in 1991 is now an influential integration association that contributed to the development of fledgling sovereign nations in the post-Soviet space. “The CIS helped us preserve and develop our historical ties. The political wisdom of our leaders and heads of government of the CIS member states has certainly played a key role in these processes. This political consensus has made possible the full sovereignty of our countries and the high level of integration in the CIS,” Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized.

The Inter-Parliamentary Assembly has become an integral part of integration, a mechanism to develop and harmonize the laws in the CIS countries and adopt model laws, and an influential platform to discuss the most complex and sensitive issues and to find solutions. The IPA, according to Mikhail Myasnikovich, is a circle of like-minded people. “Much has been accomplished. Today, when the world is going through turbulent economic and socio-political times, we need a new agenda. We see that many tools do not work. We should review the attitude to the documents adopted by the CIS IPA. We should enhance their status so that the countries-signatories adhere to their commitments,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.

In recent years there have been cases when individual states of the CIS adopted decisions unilaterally affecting their integration partners. “I think we should refrain from such actions,” Mikhail Myasnikovich said.
