Belarus hopes to maintain positive momentum in relations with Belgium

MINSK, 15 March (BelTA) – Belarus hopes for the positive momentum in the relations with Belgium, Belarus' Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said as he met with Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Didier Reynders on 15 March, BelTA has learned.

According to Vladimir Makei, Belarus has always viewed Belgium as an important partner. He named Didier Reynders' visit as symbolic since the two countries are marking 25 years of the diplomatic relations in 2017.

The Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs stated that the parties discussed a number of important issues related to bilateral relations and cooperation in the international arena. “There is a clear understanding of the need to maintain the positive momentum in the development of bilateral relations and international cooperation,” Vladimir Makei noted. He also expressed readiness to discuss all issues on the agenda, including sensitive issues.

For his part, Didier Reynders also spoke in favor of the development of bilateral cooperation on a wide range of issues and urged to continue the positive developments that are taking place in Belarus in various areas.

He also stressed that Belarus has an important role to play in the Eastern Partnership initiative.

Didier Reynders believes that the cooperation between Belarus and the EU does not contradict the relations with Russia. “It is possible to have good relations both with the EU and Russia,” he said.
