Ambassador summoned after Lithuanian president besmirches Belarus

MINSK, 6 June (BelTA) – The ambassador of Lithuania to Belarus has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Lithuania President Dalia Grybauskaite made a number of statements in an interview with the LRT TV channel, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BelTA.

During the meeting the Belarusian side demanded an explanation due to the Lithuanian head of state accusing Belarus of being a threat to the Baltic states and Poland.

It was emphasized that the turn of phrase the Lithuanian president had used, including the words “aggressive games”, represents an insult for Belarus as a country, which pursues a peace-loving policy and makes a real and universally recognized contribution to stronger regional security.

The press service noted that such statements are never meant to bolster security in the region. Instead they are designed to enhance one's recognition by partners in NATO and gain popularity among voters.

“It is very odd that the president of a country should choose to resort to such rhetoric considering our friendly relations are cemented by the Belarusian-Lithuanian agreement on good neighborhood and cooperation, which has been in effect for over 20 years,” said the source. The attention of the Lithuanian ambassador was drawn to the fact that good neighborhood are the key words in this agreement since “it is impossible to choose one's neighbors, they are given by god”.
