Samsonov wins silver at 2013 LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup


MINSK, 28 October (BelTA) - Belarus’ Vladimir Samsonov won silver at the 2013 LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup which concluded in Belgium’s Verviers on 27 October, BelTA has learnt.

In the final match the veteran of Team Belarus, world No.15, lost to China’s Xu Xin 1-4 (6-11, 14-12, 8-11, 9-11, 7-11). Vladimir Samsonov, 37, is a three-time winner of the World Cup.

Vladimir Samsonov was one of the 20 World Cup participants. In the group stage he lost 2-4 to Chuang Chih-Yuan of China but then bounced back by winning against Jung Youngsik of South Korea 4-3. In the quarterfinal the Belarusian was again drawn against Chuang Chih-Yuan and this time hammered the Chinese 4-1 to set up a semifinal date against Germany’s Timo Boll. Vladimir Samsonov had earlier met the German nine times at different tournaments, Timo Boll overpowering the Belarusian six times. Vladimir Samsonov’s last victory over Timo Boll was in 2007, after which the German won four matches. However, this time Vladimir Samsonov managed to blank his opponent by a 4-0 margin.
