MINSK, 9 September (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 6 Aryna Sabalenka has failed to reached the US Open final for the second time in a row, losing to world number 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, in a 2-hour 11-minute semifinal showdown, BelTA has learned.
Aryna Sabalenka defeated world number 22 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal.
The Belarusian lost to Canada's Leylah Fernandez in the last year's US Open semifinal.
In the other semifinal world number 5 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia saw off France's world number 17 Caroline Garcia to make it to the final.
In the men's semifinals Russia's world number 31 Karen Khachanov will face Norway's world number 7 Casper Ruud while world number 26 Frances Tiafoe of the United States will take on Spain's world number 3 Carlos Alcaraz.
The U.S. Open is set to have a record-setting total prize of $60 million. Winners in the men's and women's singles events will earn $2.6 million each, finalists - $1.3 million. The final Grand Slam event of the year will be over on 11 September.
