MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) – Dinamo Minsk lost to Avangard Omsk 2-3 in their third game of the KHL Nadezhda Cup final to complete the 2013/14 KHL season on 5 April, BelTA has learnt.
The Russian ice hockey club has become the second holder of the main trophy of the additional tournament for the KHL teams that fail to make it into the playoffs since it was introduced two years ago.
Alexander Materukhin and Sergei Drozd both found the back of the net in the opening period to take the lead after Nikita Pivstakin downed the Belarusians 0-1 at 9:28 of the first.
Alexander Materukhin, assisted by Zbynek Irgl, beat Avangard goalie Oleg Shilin for the first time in the three games of the Nadezhda Cup final. Soon after erasing the deficit, the Bisons earned two almost simultaneous penalties which left them 3-on-5. Withstanding the rival's attacks, the Belarusians were able to capitalize on their man-advantage which followed soon afterwards. Sergei Drozd who gave Dinamo a lead equaled Alexander Materukhin in the number of goals scored in the KHL Nadezhda Cup tournament: six each.
The Minskers did not enjoy the lead for long however as they lost it early in the second period. Sergei Shirokov's one-timer made 2-2 on the scoreboard. Two teams played with extreme caution almost until the end of the match. The players started preparing themselves for an extra period as Alexander Perezhogin's goal after a fast counterattack decided the winner with 15 seconds left to play.
After the match Avangard Omsk were handed the Nadezhda Cup trophy. Last year the winner of the tournament was Dinamo Riga.

In the semifinal the Bisons lost only one game to Severstal Cherepovets making it four meetings overall – 2-5; 3-2OT, 4-1; 3-0. The Nadezhda Cup holder Avangard Omsk reached the final sending home Ugra Khanty-Mansiysk in the quarterfinal and Traktor Chelyabinsk in the semifinal.
Dinamo Minsk finished the 6th KHL season 14th in the Western Conference. It has already been made known that Czech forward Zbynek Irgl will not play for the Belarusian team next season.
After finishing the KHL season, a group of Belarusian players from Dinamo Minsk is expected to join the training camp of the Belarusian national ice hockey team in the preparation for the 2014 IIHF World Championship. Sergei Kostitsyn of Belarus from Avangard Omsk has also been called up to the training camp of the Belarusian national team.
