Belarus’ NOC celebrates 34 years since founding

MINSK, 22 March (BelTA) - The National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus is celebrating the 34th anniversary since its founding, BelTA learned from the NOC press service.

The National Olympic Committee of the BSSR was founded on this day 34 years ago. Since the country gained independent it was renamed into the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Belarus. At the 101st session of the IOC in Monaco in September 1993, the NOC of Belarus became a full member of the international Olympic family - our country received the right to send a national team to the Olympic Games.

Vladimir Ryzhenkov was the first head of the National Olympic Committee. In 1997, the NOC was taken charge by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko who held the post for 24 years. In 2021, Viktor Lukashenko became the new head of the sports organization. On 15 January 2025, he was re-elected for a second term.

Over 34 years Belarusian athletes have competed in 16 Olympic Games: eight winter and eight summer ones. Belarusians athletes have won 109 medals: 22 gold, 39 silver and 48 bronze medals. Every year, the NOC provides multifaceted support to the federations to develop elite sports and to promote children's and youth sports.

The organization also implements projects that promote the Olympic movement and popularize sport and active lifestyle in Belarus. Such events include the sports and cultural festival Vytoki, the Olympic Day, the National Athletes' Forum, the Olympic Christmas Tree and the Belarusian NOC award ceremony (first held in 2024).
