Belarus’ Karaliova and Zuyeva begin Olympic campaign

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) - The first medal events of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games will be contested in Italy on 7 February, BelTA has learned.

The first Belarusian woman to take to the Olympic course will be cross-country skier Hanna Karaliova. At 15:00 Minsk time, the women’s 10+10 km skiathlon will start in Tesero. The athletes will race the first 10km using the classic technique and the second 10km using freestyle. The start list includes 70 athletes, among them the winner of the last two World Championships in this event, Sweden’s Ebba Andersson, and the leader of the 2025/26 World Cup overall standings, American Jessica Diggins.

At 18:00, at the Milan speed skating stadium, the women will compete for medals in the 3000m event. Twenty athletes will take part in the races; Maryna Zuyeva of Belarus will skate in the seventh pair alongside Kazakhstan’s Nadezhda Morozova. Four years ago, the Belarusian athlete finished 16th in this event, and her best result in the 2025/26 World Cup season was eighth place. The reigning world champion, Joy Beune of the Netherlands, and the 2022 Games medalist, Canadian Isabelle Weidemann, will compete in the final pair.

The first set of medals of the 2026 Winter Olympics will be awarded in the men’s downhill (13:30). Thirty-six alpine skiers will compete for medals on the course in Bormio. Additionally, finals will be held today in snowboard big air (21:30) and women’s normal hill ski jumping (21:45).
