MINSK, 29 October (BelTA) – Georgii Gurtsiev secures Belarus’ first medal at 2025 Wuxi World Taekwondo Championships in China, BelTA has learned.
The athlete claimed a medal in the -58kg weight category. His path to the podium began with a victory over Nepal’s Sumit Bist in the round of 64, followed by a win against Georgia’s Vitaliy Geladze. In the round of 16, he bested Pan Kuei-An of Chinese Taipei before moving past Nouridine Issaka Garba of Niger.
The Belarusian athlete powered past 2024 Olympic medalist Gashim Magomedov of Azerbaijan in the semifinal, but fell short against Iran’s Abolfazl Zandi in the gold medal match, settling for silver. This mirrors his result from the 2023 Worlds in Baku, followed by his Olympic appearance in Paris a year later.
The global forum brought together around a thousand athletes from 180 countries. Belarusians Raman Turavinau (-80kg) and Yuliya Vitko (-57kg) reached the round of 16, while Valeriya Smychkova (-62kg), Yahor Kazlou (-54kg), Maksim Bandarevich (-63kg), Sarmat Tcakoev (-68kg), Danili Yurkou (-87kg), and the previous World Championships’ bronze medalist Artsiom Plonis (+87kg) were defeated in the second round. Belarusian Artsiom Babakhin (-74kg) will compete on the final day of the tournament in Wuxi on 30 October.
