Youth Parliament at Belarus' National Assembly to begin working this spring

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) - The Youth Parliament at the National Assembly of Belarus will begin working this spring, chairperson of the Standing Commission on Health, Physical Education, Family and Youth Policy Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“During the meeting of the president with students in May 2017 ‘Youth. A Look Into the Future' an idea was suggested to set up a national youth parliament in Belarus with the aim of developing the legal and political culture, supporting the civic engagement of young people, involving and preparing them to participate in the life of the state and society, creating conditions for dialogue and exchange of experience, developing new approaches to solving problems in the youth environment, building up human resources and promoting talented youth,” Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak noted.

The initiative has been supported by the head of state and all stakeholders. "As a result, a regulation on the Youth Council (Parliament) of the National Assembly has been drafted. The text was approved by the Presidium of the Council of the Republic on 7 February," the MP said.

Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak recalled that the Youth Chamber has been functioning at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia for two years. “The Youth Parliament will operate at the National Assembly. We have decided that it will include ten young people from every region - the most worthy representatives of the youth. They will be nominated by the regional councils and the Minsk City Council of Deputies. In March or April they will have an orientation session, and after that they will start working,” she informed.

Members of the Youth Parliament will be able to participate in the sessions of the House of Representatives, work with MPs in the districts, and make their legislative proposals. "The aim of adult MPs is to teach young people to communicate with people, among themselves. First of all, we are preparing an active citizen of our society. This will be a kind of leadership school," Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak added.
