MINSK, 18 January (BelTA) – The Belarusian duda (bagpipe) could be nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List, Deputy Culture Minister Sergei Sarakach said in an interview with the Belarus 3 TV channel, BelTA reports.

The Culture Ministry noted that active work continues in Belarus to nominate national heritage elements for UNESCO. Among the leading short-term candidates is the Belarusian duda music tradition. “At first glance, this instrument might appear common to other cultures, but the Belarusian duda has its own distinctive features,” explained Sergei Sarakach. “For example, while the Scottish bagpipes are a martial instrument, the Belarusian duda symbolizes celebration, peace, and reveals the true Belarusian spirit. There are about 30 artisans in Belarus who have revived this instrument. Today, it is widely used across the country by ensembles such as Khoroshki and the G.I. Tsitovich National Academic Folk Music Choir of the Republic of Belarus.”

Four tangible and seven intangible objects from Belarus are already on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex, the Belarusian duda (bagpipe), and draniki (potato pancakes) are next in line for consideration.
