Belarusian traces on Titanic found

MINSK, 17 December (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the TV channel Belarus One told about the Belarusian passengers of the Titanic liner, BelTA has learned.

Belarus' main cultural and public event of 1998 was the release of the world sensation: the film "Titanic" by James Cameron. Cinemas all over the country were packed to the brim. It was a golden time for scalpers: they sold tickets at twice the price. The country did not get rid of illegal sellers at that time. The peak of work of gray ticket offices will be during the premiere of "Avatar" only ten years later.

"Titanic" became the highest-grossing film in the history of cinematography. The premiere in Belarus took place six months later than the world one. It immediately grabbed the media space and more. Celine Dion's song became a hit at the discos of that time. Even the music from the film was sold in kiosks on pirate cassette tapes.

There was a huge interest in the history of the liner, in which Belarusian traces were found. More than a hundred citizens of the Russian Empire were among 2,000 people on board. It is known that two women from Belarus were saved in the crash of the Titanic. The watch of a victim, Vitebsk resident, was sold at an auction 106 years after the disaster.
