"On Point"
MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) - The domestic political conflict in the USA is linked to the fact that people living in different states often have different visions of what modern America should be, political analyst Alexey Naumov, the author of the Telegram project Vneshpol, said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“The USA is a rather diverse country. Literally, there are two Americas. One of them is the America of the major coastal cities: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco... There, you find people of different skin colors who speak different languages and practice different religions,” Alexey Naumov said.
According to the analyst, the other America refers to the central part of the country. He pointed to the derogatory term “flyover states”: “These are U.S. states that are only needed to fly over in an airplane. When you fly from New York to Los Angeles across the USA, you fly over them.”
Alexey Naumov noted that these two Americas do not understand each other and have different views on what the modern USA should represent. “People living on the coasts believe that the USA is a ‘shining city upon a hill’, a country for everyone who wants to live together. Meanwhile, people living in the interior of the USA say that America was founded as a white, Christian nation of God-fearing people who respect private property, are armed, and do not want a huge government apparatus over them,” he emphasized.
The political analyst believes that the U.S. domestic conflict stems precisely from these reasons. A clear example is the situation with the deportation of illegal migrants. “‘Inner Americans’ (people living in the country's heartland) support such a policy. At the same time, ‘coastal Americans’ hold the directly opposite point of view. These people are in a state of absolute misunderstanding of each other,” Alexey Naumov said.
