"On Point"
MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) - The issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO is a technical matter, Doctor of Historical Sciences Nikolai Platoshkin said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Discussing the likelihood of NATO membership for Ukraine, Nikolai Platoshkin noted that for Russia there are two fundamental positions: “We disagree on two things – Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the presence of foreign troops on Ukrainian territory as a guarantee [of security].”
“The Americans, I think, agree with this, but all the sponsors disagree – [French President Emmanuel] Macron, [German Chancellor Friedrich] Merz, and [British Prime Minister Keir] Starmer. They don’t delve into it. The UK has always had very close relations with the USA. They don’t want to go against Trump; they don’t care about us. Trump wants to wrap all this up before Christmas. They can’t stand against Trump, so they’ve stepped back into the shadows,” the political analyst said.
Nikolai Platoshkin acknowledged the possibility that among the 30 member countries of the North Atlantic Alliance bloc, there might be those who would vote for Ukraine’s accession to NATO. At the same time, the analyst drew attention to the existence of a mechanism for obtaining guarantees as a “major U.S. ally outside of NATO”. “It’s a technical matter. It’s just that Ukraine might not agree to it,” he said.
