Svisloch to commemorate its liberation with historical reenactment

GRODNO, 13 July (BelTA) – A historical reenactment of wartime events will take place in Svisloch to mark the anniversary of the city’s liberation from Nazi occupation, the Svisloch District Executive Committee told BelTA.

“The aim of the reenactment is to portray various stages of the Great Patriotic War in Svisloch District: the initial invasion by Nazi forces, the harrowing days of occupation marked by executions of civilians, the liberation of the city and district on 17 July 1944, and the tragic death of Colonel Nikolai Massonov, commander of the 217th Rifle Division of the 29th Rifle Corps of the 48th Army of the 1st Belarusian Front, who was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. His vehicle struck a mine while inspecting division units,” Deputy Chairman of the Svisloch District Executive Committee Yuri Kulikov said.

The reenactment will be staged near a historic building that existed during the Great Patriotic War and now houses the Zvezda cinema. Around 200 participants, including professional reenactors from Gomel and Brest as well as local residents, will take part in the large-scale event, which is expected to last about an hour.

Yuri Kulikov added that commemorative events will be held in Svisloch on 19 July, including a memorial rally, flower-laying ceremonies at the mass grave of Soviet soldiers and partisans and at the monument to Nikolai Massonov, erected several years ago. The day will also feature a concert by the Pinsk Border Guard Orchestra.
