Russian ambassador: Belarus consistently honors memory of war soldiers, victims

MINSK, 27 January (BelTA) - The Belarusians pay tribute to the memory of those who fought during the Great Patriotic War and won, and those who died, Russian Ambassador to Belarus Dmitry Mezentsev said at an event dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the prisoners of the Nazi camp Auschwitz, BelTA has learned.

The Russian ambassador noted that the seemingly prosperous 21st century presents enormous challenges to humanity.

According to him, today is a landmark day: exactly 75 years ago the Red Army liberated Auschwitz. Many international events, including those in Israel, have been dedicated to this date. The world, including Belarus, remembers the victims of the war. Today is also the day when the Leningrad siege was ended completely.

At the same time, Ambassador Dmitry Mezentsev noted that for some reason the obviousness of the feat of the victors is being questioned today, and this poses a threat to international security.

The ambassador noted that these events precede the 75th anniversary of the Great Victory. According to him, it is very important to pass on the historical truth to the young generation, who will shape the policies of countries and between countries, and in the world as a whole.

The event was attended by Belarus' Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Dapkiunas, Israeli Ambassador to Belarus Alon Shoham, German Ambassador to Belarus Manfred Huterer, U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Belarus Jennifer Moore, Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Jewish Public Associations and Communities Vladimir Chernitsky.

The event also featured the exhibition “The Mirror of Generations”, and the documentary “Minsk Ghetto Chronicles”.
