MINSK, 14 October (BelTA) - Sergei Rachkov, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives, hosted a meeting of members of the IPU Eurasia Group on the sidelines of the 149th IPU Assembly in Geneva on 13 October, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.
The meeting took stock of the IPU Executive Committee meeting on the amendments to the IPU statute and rules. The participants discussed the main documents and events of the 149th IPU Assembly in order to coordinate the positions of the delegations of the member states on the issues submitted for consideration. Special attention was paid to the complex regional and global situation, increasing risks of nuclear confrontation between global players and the need to take collective measures aimed primarily at de-escalation of tensions.
Sergei Rachkov, President of the IPU Eurasia Group, praised the potential of the Eurasia Group as a forum uniting the states of the region, which plays an important role in the current context of global and regional security. “This region should be a donor of stability and security, a bridge linking other parts of the world,” he emphasized. Sergei Rachkov also updated the participants of the meeting on the candidates from the group for vacant positions in the IPU elected bodies.
