Nuclear materials accounting rules passed in Belarus

MINSK, 21 June (BelTA) – The Belarusian Emergencies Ministry has adopted rules that will regulate accounting for and control of nuclear materials, BelTA has learned.

The rules will apply to all the organizations that use and store nuclear materials.

In line with the rules these organizations will have to use the relevant state system to keep records of nuclear materials weighing over 0 grams. The number includes plutonium, depleted uranium, enriched uranium, natural uranium, and thorium. Records will have to be kept of these materials in any physical state (concentrate, chemical compound, metal or alloy) or chemical compounds except for ore and waste ore.

After nuclear fuel assemblies are extracted from a nuclear reactor and put into storage outside the reactor core, information about the accumulated plutonium and spent uranium will have to be entered into accounting documents and reports. The reports will have to be sent to the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor) for the sake of making changes in the state system of accounting for and control of nuclear materials.
