MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) - Interfaith peace and unity are essential for a country and a society, Nikolai Buzin, Chairman of the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives, said during the roundtable “State and Church: Joint efforts to protect traditional values and support the institution of the family” held at the National Library of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“The issue of interfaith peace and unity is the cornerstone of the development of the country, the life of the state, and the formation of society," said Nikolai Buzin.

The MP referred to the words of President Aleksandr Lukashenko: “How we will live tomorrow depends on each of us and on our unity. If we are united and cohesive, we will be strong, and if we are strong, the country will be peaceful and prosperous.” He added that a country can only be strong through the unity of all segments of society, the cementing foundation of which is faith and our values.
Nikolai Buzin noted that the topic of the roundtable was defined taking into account the goals and objectives of the country's social and economic development program for the current five-year period, the Year of the Belarusian Women, and the instructions given by the head of state during his Address to the Belarusian people and the National Assembly.

"The Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus invites representatives of Belarus’ major faiths to dialogue. The opinion of everyone who cherishes the future of the country and the Belarusian people is important to us,” Nikolai Buzin noted.

He emphasized that the upcoming five-year plan is fundamentally centered on the demographic challenge, which cannot be resolved without the involvement of faith communities. “Preserving and strengthening traditional family values contributes to the security of our country. Therefore, this issue is of great importance to our society and state,” he stated.

The MP emphasized that Belarus’ social policy is aimed at supporting motherhood, childhood, and large families. The state is undertaking a number of measures to support the family, ranging from financial assistance to changes in working conditions and information policy. However, these goals can only be achieved through joint efforts, and in this regard, religious organizations provide invaluable assistance.
Nikolai Buzin noted that a legal environment has been created in Belarus that enables religious organizations to function and thrive, while ensuring citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of conscience and worship. In 2024, a new wording of the law on freedom of conscience and religious organizations came into force, incorporating provisions and proposals concerning the ability of the church to effectively carry out educational, spiritual, moral, and social service activities.

The roundtable continues the dialogue between the House of Representatives of the eighth convocation and religious organizations on pressing issues regarding the development of Belarusian society, which began in Zhirovichi in 2025. It is organized by the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives, with the support of the Commissioner for Religious and Ethnic Affairs and the National Library of Belarus.
