Minister: No Omicron cases in Belarus yet

MOSCOW, 13 December (BelTA) – No cases of the new Omicron variant have been reported in Belarus yet, Belarusian Healthcare Minister Dmitry Pinevich told reporters at the collegium meeting of the healthcare ministries of Russia and Belarus in Moscow on 13 December, BelTA has learned.

“No, it has not been confirmed,” the minister said answering the question whether the omicron variant has been reported in Belarus.

“We see from open sources that this variant is not more severe than Delta. It spreads faster, to put it simply, but it does not pose a higher risk than the Delta variant,” Dmitry Pinevich said.

Nevertheless, the minister emphasized that the healthcare system must be ready for any developments. “Indeed, we are getting ready for it, but we do not expect any significant changes in the epidemiological situation,” the minister added.

The collegium meeting is taking place in Moscow on 13 December. Taking part in it are Russian Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko and his Belarusian counterpart Dmitry Pinevich, State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Dmitry Mezentsev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Russia Vladimir Semashko. The main topic on the agenda is improvement of the quality control in healthcare.
