GOMEL, 26 November (BelTA) - Respect for history is the foundation that allows us to believe in tomorrow, Aide to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky said during a ceremony in Gomel marking the 82nd anniversary of the city's liberation from the Nazi invaders and unveiling a monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union Konstantin Rokossovsky, BelTA has learned.
“In August 1914, a young man named Konstantin Rokossovsky volunteered for a cavalry unit in the first days of the war. From that moment on, he would never take off his military uniform for the rest of his life. He would defend the Fatherland. He became one of the most celebrated, talented, and effective military commanders not only of the 20th century but, considering the scale of the battles and military operations, perhaps in all of human history,” Vladimir Medinsky noted.
He emphasized that fate was kind to Marshal Rokossovsky. “He would go on to command the Victory Parade on 24 June 1945. And here, at the base of the monument [unveiled in Gomel] you will symbolically see both the cobblestones of Red Square and the images of German standards thrown at the foot of the mausoleum,” Vladimir Medinsky emphasized..

“They say that without a past, there is no future. Our history is continuous, and respect for it is the foundation that allows us to believe in tomorrow. I believe that figures like Marshal of Victory Konstantin Rokossovsky bind our history together, unite our peoples, and make us believe that as long as we are together, as long as we are united, the Victory that Marshal Rokossovsky carried will always be ours,” Vladimir Medinsky said.
