"On Point"
MINSK, 4 December (BelTA) – Ukraine cannot maintain an army of 600,000, Doctor of Historical Sciences Nikolai Platoshkin said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Reflecting on US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, Nikolai Platoshkin noted that regarding the recognition of certain territories as Russian, the linkage to lifting sanctions is significant. “This plan precisely outlines a gradual reduction in sanctions against Russia, their removal, and even an invitation for Russia to join the G8,” the political scientist said. “China has been receiving such invitations for 15 years. China says: ‘Why should we, really? What is there to do?’ It’s a candy wrapper without the candy.”
Nikolai Platoshkin noted that Russia would agree to proposed conditions concerning Ukraine’s non-accession to NATO: “They demand some law or a statement of non-aggression from us, which is absolutely not a problem. It can be decided in five minutes.”
The political scientist drew attention to a clause stipulating that Ukraine commits to limiting its troop numbers to 600,000. “Before the special military operation, they had 250,000, and I believe even that was partly on paper. Before Crimea, they had just over 100,000. The Bundeswehr has 170,000, the French army has about 200,000, and the British have the same. So, even 600,000 is the equivalent of the three largest Western European armies combined. And the main point is that Ukraine simply will not be able to sustain them,” Nikolai Platoshkin stated. “Let them write down 900,000. In this case mobilization would need to be carried out every year; it will never be voluntary. And the crucial thing is to sustain them. Any state would collapse in such circumstances!”
