MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) - The 21st century requires building an indivisible and fair global security system, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova said at a plenary session to discuss the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening multilateral cooperation in Asia in Baku, Azerbaijan on 19 February, BelTA has learned.
"We are deeply convinced that the 21st century requires building indivisible and fair global security architecture, developing our countries for the sake of current and future generations and creating a common strategy to prevent outside interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. In this regard, Belarus calls to join efforts, including those of our parliaments, for the international legal consolidation of electoral sovereignty as an essential and exclusive right of a state to independently organize and conduct election campaigns," Natalya Kochanova said.
This is important for every country, the speaker added. "The recent presidential election in Belarus has demonstrated to the whole world an example of the fulfillment of the full power of the people and the freedom of their choice under the supremacy of the national legislation. Hundreds of international and tens of thousands of national observers, representatives of the parliaments, members of the Assembly, who worked in our country, confirm this," she emphasized.
"The formation of the observer mission of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly will contribute to further strengthening of the role and authority of international cooperation in Asia. Interregional interaction could give an impetus to further rapprochement of our countries, which will undoubtedly have positive social and economic effects. This includes stimulation of business and investment activity in the regions, implementation of joint projects, creation of local points of growth," Natalya Kochanova added.
According to the speaker, a huge potential for the development of interaction between the countries is seen in the strengthening of humanitarian and cultural ties. "Projects in these areas strengthen friendship and bring the peoples together. Belarus is certainly interested in fruitful cooperation with all countries in this area. We need to more actively develop cultural tourism, invite each other to participate in festivals held in our countries, arrange tours of theatrical and creative groups," she said.
Young people carry out an important consolidating mission in the modern world, the speaker pointed out. "Motivated, well-educated and active young people play a key role in the successful development of any state. They are a strategic resource for every country," Natalya Kochanova stressed. "It is reasonable to maximize the potential of our countries to respond to the challenges of our time and to develop systematic approaches that will contribute to the steady improvement of the well-being and quality of life of our peoples."
"This year all progressive countries will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Belarus treats this event reverently. Nowadays, it is more important than ever to join efforts to preserve the historical memory of such tragic events. Belarus knows like no one else what war and peace mean," she added.
"We are sincerely grateful to the Executive Council of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly for the recommendation to grant the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus an observer status. We would like to thank our colleagues for their support. For its part, Belarus will contribute in every possible way to the further effective development of good friendly relations with all Asian countries based on mutual respect and understanding," the speaker noted.
