"On Point"
MINSK, 7 December (BelTA) - By closing its border with Belarus, Lithuania has demonstrated complete indifference to its own citizens in the first place, national security expert Aleksandr Tishchenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Commenting on Lithuania’s shortsighted policy, the expert noted that Vilnius lacks economic and political literacy, as well as sound goal-setting. This is also indicated by its unwillingness to engage in dialogue with official Minsk. “Even official Vilnius, through its foreign ministry, claims that Belarus allegedly wants to gain legitimacy after contacts with Lithuania. But honestly, we couldn’t care less about their recognition,” said Aleksandr Tishchenko.
At the same time, he emphasized, official Minsk operates within the framework of international standards and agreements, which cannot be said for Vilnius. “The decision to close the border was made by the government, right? That means these issues need to be resolved with the government of Belarus. They technically blocked everything and want to technically reopen it the same way. But this isn’t a garden gate. It’s a state border, border security. Since they’ve shown contempt for their own people, why should we worry about it?” the expert posed a rhetorical question.
Aleksandr Tishchenko added that Belarus provided Lithuanian carriers with services such as guarded parking areas and overnight accommodations for drivers. “Everything was done in a very civilized manner. The price isn’t satisfactory, right? Sorry, that’s the market: demand sharply increases, and so does the cost. This principle works for them, but for some reason, it shouldn’t work for us. So, they got everything they wanted,” the expert concluded.
