Initiative to set up single R&D space in Union State described as important

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – Setting up the Union State's R&D space until 2030 will help ensure a proper level of competitiveness of the economies, make advancements in import substitution and develop innovative proposals. The presidents of the two countries supported this decision, State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State Dmitry Mezentsev told journalists before a meeting at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus to take stock of the implementation of programs and measures and the execution of the Union State budget in 2024, BelTA has learned.

It was noted that the common R&D space of the Belarus-Russia Union State will help scientists of the two countries to pioneer new approaches in artificial intelligence and effectively continue the programs of digitalization of the national economies and humanitarian projects.

“Today we are also discussing humanitarian programs. Belarus and Russia have a huge respect for the Soviet people who won the Great Patriotic War. The Supreme State Council [of the Belarus-Russia Union State] has approved a comprehensive plan to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Victory,” Dmitry Mezentsev said. “The plan envisages holding events not only until 9 May but also throughout the year, including 41 humanitarian events within the framework of the Union State."
First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Academician Sergei Chizhik pointed out that two programs related to space and physical optics research implemented by the Union State are on the home stretch.

“The output of our research is new models of small spacecraft and innovative optical solutions, including those in optical spectroscopy. The spectral analysis allows us to study multilayer images that not only provide visual information about the area, but also determine its properties, such as the condition of vegetation and soil,” he explained.

Another promising area of scientific research within the framework of the Union State is biotechnologies. The scientists have already carried out a number of studies in genetics, the results of which find application in agriculture and medicine.

The participants of the meeting discussed 18 programs and seven measures of the Union State, most of which are related to defense, security, law enforcement, defense and military cooperation, social policy and economy.
