OSTROVETS, 1 October (BelTA) – The IAEA is ready to continue cooperation with Belarus on radioactive waste management, Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said at a meeting with Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Karankevich on 1 October, BelTA has learned.
"It is a great honor and pleasure for me to finally visit Ostrovets after so many years of joint work on this project. Today I had the opportunity and honor to discuss with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko the importance of the BelNPP for the economy, the country’s technological development and households. He assured me of his interest and intention to continue working with the IAEA to achieve even greater results in the future. The IAEA was involved in the BelNPP project; its technical specialists visited the plant. We interacted from the very beginning on the matters of choosing the location of the plant, developing rules of interaction in emergency situations, and working in the initial operational stage. Now we are able to talk about the support of the plant," Rafael Grossi said.
He also urged to look to the future. "We are ready to continue our interaction on waste management," the IAEA chief added.
Cooperation with the IAEA is multilateral and covers a wide range of areas. The agency assists Belarus in addressing the most important issues on the national nuclear power program, nuclear energy infrastructure and nuclear safety. The IAEA provided Belarus with technical and expert support at all stages of the BelNPP construction.
IAEA assessment missions have become an important element of the joint work. From 2012 to 2022, all key missions of the agency, recommended for countries building their first NPP, were carried out in Belarus. They confirmed the BelNPP compliance with the highest safety requirements. Moreover, Belarus’ successful experience and practices in a number of areas serve as an example for other countries that start developing nuclear power industry.
