MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – US President Donald Trump needed a small win before the midterms, so he will likely attempt to portray the attack on Venezuela as such a victory, economist and analyst Serghei Banari said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The expert remarked that midterm elections will be held in the United States in November 2026. In these elections, every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested. “Forecasts for the Republican Party retaining its congressional majority are grim: the most optimistic give them no better than a 40% chance, while pessimistic projections put their odds at 20% or lower,” stated Serghei Banari.
Consequently, he believes US President Donald Trump requires a small victory ahead of the midterms to secure a Republican majority. Serghei Banari noted that Trump may attempt to portray the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife as just such a victory.
“This could be a carefully orchestrated geopolitical stunt, necessary for Donald Trump given the complete lack of results and the tense situation both within the United States and internationally, where there has been little progress,” Serghei Banari added.
