Former Ukrainian PM: ‘Scale of desertion in AFU is huge’

MINSK, 12 November (BelTA) – Every month over 20,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) leave their military units without authorization, former Prime Minister of Ukraine (2010-2014) Nikolai Azarov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
Nikolai Azarov stated: “No matter how much nonsense you drill into a person's head (I call it zombifying propaganda), it's impossible to hide the scale of the losses, the scale of the absolutely inhumane attitude of the Ukrainian authorities toward their own people, the Ukrainian leadership's policy of destroying Ukraine. This eventually gets through to people. And that's why there are 300,000 criminal cases alone [on unauthorized leave from military units and desertion]. We are talking about a recorded fact, when an investigator opened a file, recorded the last name, first name, and patronymic, and then began an investigation.”

According to the former prime minister, over 20,000 servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine leave their military units without authorization monthly. “These are not my facts. These are their own facts, which members of parliament cite during debates in the Verkhovna Rada. The data is in public domain. The numbers are enormous,” he added.

When discussing the figure of nearly 300,000 servicemen who have left the Armed Forces of Ukraine without authorization, Nikolai Azarov remarked: “This, roughly speaking, is almost half the official strength of the army currently on the front lines.”

In his opinion, this is also connected to the low motivation of servicemen in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “What do you expect from people who are, grabbed on the streets, beaten, stuffed into some minibuses despite fierce resistance? They are immediately dressed in uniform and, without any training, sent to the front line. What can you expect? You can expect that as soon as an opportunity arises, serviceman will immediately surrender or run away. His choice is simple: either run away or surrender as a prisoner,” Nikolai Azarov said.
