"On Point"
MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) – The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) were created solely as instruments to influence Ukraine's leadership, member of the Another Ukraine movement, former member of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Spiridon Kilinkarov said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
When commenting on the money laundering scandal in Ukraine's energy sector, Spiridon Kilinkarov described it as one of the instruments of pressure on the country's corrupt leadership. “This is done to achieve certain tasks assigned to them by those who are somehow involved in decision-making at the level of these very anti-corruption bodies,” he emphasized.
Spiridon Kilinkarov added that in this case, it is primarily about the Americans who created and oversee these bodies: “Without their go-ahead, NABU and SAPO would not undertake any active actions in terms of making public the materials they have collected. Figuratively speaking, these bodies diligently performed their function by documenting all facts of corruption. But without the green-light, they would, of course, not have done this.”
“For the sake of objectivity, I must say that NABU and SAPO are not ‘holy’ bodies meant to fight corruption. Over ten years, they have not demonstrated any success in holding top officials accountable for corruption,” Spiridon Kilinkarov said. “But their function is completely different. They were not created to fight corruption, but to hold sway over the country's political leadership in a corrupt state. In my opinion, they have handled this function quite well."
