"On Point"
MINSK, 28 December (BelTA) - Russia and Belarus have an advantage in strategic armaments over the West, political analyst and publicist Dmitry Kulikov said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
"In the 1990s, we realized that they [the West] would try to finish us off. From the 2000s to the present day, we have been working to make that impossible, to prevent them from finishing us off. In terms of strategic armaments, for the first time in our centuries-old history of relations with the West, we have an advantage in strategic forces. Yes, the Soviet Union achieved parity in this matter by the early 1970s, and, incidentally, this led to a détente which we used very unwisely. But now, we do not merely have parity; we have an advantage. If we handle everything correctly, we will maintain it for quite some time,” Dmitry Kulikov believes.
However, all these advantages, including resource-based ones, did not simply fall from the sky, the expert noted. They were built through the efforts of those people who managed to survive the difficult 1990s.
The political commentator also touched upon the cultural-historical aspect. “It is truly unique and indeed a powerful resource. The fact that hundreds of ethnicities live as a unified whole, not under any coercion, but out of the awareness that this is their home, is also a unique factor that we undoubtedly rely on,” he stated. “Our civilizational, national experience is also something that cannot be dismissed. We treat history with great care. We understand that a full life, or a true life, exists between the past and the future. We find meaning by continuing the work of our fathers. On the other hand, we are constantly thinking about what we will leave for our children.”
