Expert opines on plans to hold Freedom Day in Belarus

MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) – The declaration of the Belarusian People's Republic was an unsuccessful attempt to establish an independent Belarusian state, historian, Rector of the Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus Vyacheslav Danilovich told the ONT TV channel on 18 March, BelTA informs.

According to the historian, the devil is in the details in this matter. “Indeed, the independence of the Belarusian People's Republic was declared on 25 March. Who recognized this independence? In fact, there were no real states that recognized it. Yes, there are certain opinions on some states, but in fact the Belarusian People's Republic project did not translate into a real state. Therefore, the celebration of this day, from my point of view as a historian, raises eyebrow. Why mark the date of the failed attempt to create an independent Belarusian state?” Vyacheslav Danilovich asked.

He is convinced that this can only benefit those who want to cement this unsuccessful attempt, who want the Belarusian statehood to weaken. “The patrons of our opposition want this date to resound, because they are not interested in Belarus being a real, strong and prosperous state. They need a weak, obedient Belarus, which will follow the instructions from abroad. That was what really happened back then, in 1918,” the historian emphasized.

Vyacheslav Danilovich drew attention to the fact that the Belarusian People's Republic did not have real sovereignty and borders. The declaration of this state was actually just a declaration of intent, and its founders acted under German occupation. “These swings, attempts to achieve something with the help of the occupation authorities were vicious,” he said.

The historian added that in fact the Belarusian People's Republic and the people who acted under the white-red-white flag failed to achieve anything good.
