Expert dwells on key military priorities for Belarus, Russia

MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) - Belarus and Russia can restrain NATO solely by relying on nuclear weapons, and this approach should form the basis of the updated military doctrine, Igor Korotchenko, Russian journalist and military expert, editor-in-chief of the Russian National Defense magazine, said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“We should take into account and proceed from the following: Russia and Belarus can restrain NATO only with exclusive reliance on nuclear weapons,” he believes. According to Igor Korotchenko, it is obvious that the nuclear doctrine should be made more adaptive.

The expert also noted the growing threat from long-range systems, which NATO countries want to deploy in Europe. “A number of military fleets of NATO member states declare the need to have a ‘long-reach arm’. While they do not have their own missiles, they want to equip themselves with American Tomahawks [an American long-range, all-weather, jet-powered, subsonic cruise missile family]. In a massive strike, it will be a serious threat to Russia and Belarus,” Igor Korotchenko said.

In response, Belarus and Russia should focus on developing a reliable multilayer air defense system. “This is the number one goal and task, including taking into account the experience of the special military operation. We should not absolutize this experience, but we should not discount it either. Especially given massive drone strikes: 200, 300, 500 drones per day,” he added.

According to him, Belarus needs to increase the supply of air defense systems. “I am convinced that it is extremely important for Belarus to continue buying Russian complexes TOR-M2 on a wheeled chassis. This is a cover for the Belarusian nuclear power plant, troop deployment areas, control systems,”  Igor Korotchenko said.

The expert added that Belarus had already received the Russian S-400 system and that the delivery of additional sets was not ruled out: “S-400 is a system with anti-missile interception capabilities. The latest data showed the interception of missiles of Patriot PAC-3 complex. This is hypersonic. The S-400 provides such a capability.”

Russia's arsenal also includes the new Buk-M3 and S-350 systems - the latter with enhanced capabilities to destroy air targets. The priority is drone countermeasures. “We need cheap small-size missiles for mass interception of loitering munitions. We need cheap intercept missiles. Mass production and scaling-up will give fast results,” the expert said.
