Expert compares Ignalina NPP in Lithuania to nuclear waste dump site

MINSK, 8 December (BelTA) - The Lithuanian government's decision to close the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant not only deprived the country of its own nuclear energy capabilities but also effectively created a nuclear waste repository site on its territory, PhD in Economics Georgy Grits said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
Georgy Grits, discussing the prospects of nuclear energy in Belarus, noted that the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant was constructed, in part, with the aim of exporting electricity. Among the potential consumers were the Baltic states. For instance, Lithuania could have purchased electricity from Belarus as its Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant was no longer operational. However, the official Vilnius went hysterical over the construction of the nuclear power plant in Belarus. In fact Lithuanian politicians created a nuclear waste dump site near the border with Belarus, Georgy Grits emphasized.

“Lithuania created a nuclear waste repository on its own territory. The issue isn't even that it's a few kilometers from the Belarusian border. It's about the fact that Lithuanian politicians are storing nuclear waste on their own land. You can't call that common sense,” the economist said.

He believes such a policy was pursued “essentially in spite of” Belarus and the Union State as a whole: “This fundamentally violates all diplomatic or ethical norms.”
