CSTO peacekeepers about to embark on peace support operation as part of exercise in Belarus

MOSCOW, 13 October (BelTA) – Peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization are preparing for a joint peacekeeping operation as part of the command and staff exercise Nerushimoye Bratstvo 2020 [Indestructible Brotherhood] in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Participants of the exercise were preparing for a joint peacekeeping operation in the military exercise area Losvido in Belarus on 13 October. This stage of the exercise began when Chief of the CSTO Collective Peacekeeping Forces, Colonel Dmitry Sobol received a UN mandate to carry out a peacekeeping operation. The commanding officer presented the concept of the joint operation.

Chief of the Exercise Command Staff, Colonel Vladimir Bely noted that the units were practicing escorting columns with humanitarian cargoes, deployment in responsibility areas, defending the areas, and counteracting assaults.

The peacekeepers also brushed up on their first aid skills, patrolled areas, set up checkpoints, and practiced ways to counteract mass riots.

A research team has been deployed as part of this year's exercise to look into matters of logistics of the CSTO peacekeeping forces. Vladimir Bely said: “It is important for us to understand and later on polish certain aspects of interaction. We will submit proposals to command and control bodies after the exercise,” he said.

The command and staff exercise Nerushimoye Bratstvo 2020 [Indestructible Brotherhood] for peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) began on 12 October. A total of over 900 people are taking part in the exercise. Over 120 units of military hardware and special hardware, including flying drones, two Mi-8AMTSh helicopters and two Mi-24 attack helicopters of the Central Military District of the Armed Forces of Russia, have been deployed as part of the exercise.

The exercise has been organized as part of this year's plan on the joint training of command bodies, assets, and forces of the CSTO collective security system.
