CIS hydrometeorology council discusses joint projects, prospects of integration of weather services

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) – The 36th session of the Interstate Council for Hydrometeorology of the Commonwealth of Independent States took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 25-26 September, the press service of the CIS Executive Committee told BelTA.

The event gathered representatives of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, the World Meteorological Organization, and the CIS Executive Committee.

Participants of the session discussed a number of matters concerning the operation of national weather services, their interaction within the framework of the Commonwealth of Independent States and the World Meteorological Organization. They also summarized results of fulfillment of the strategy on developing the hydrometeorological activities of the CIS states and the plan on implementing the strategy. Matters concerning the expansion of international cooperation were discussed.

The session became a key moment for evaluating the progress achieved in realizing the strategic goals of development of hydrometeorological activities in the CIS region. Close attention was paid to prospects of integrating the national services into a global data and technology sharing system. It would allow increasing the precision of forecasts and the efficiency of warnings about dangerous weather phenomena. Within the framework of international cooperation participants of the session looked into opportunities for joint projects and programs aimed at improving the qualification of specialists, at modernizing the physical infrastructure, and at introducing innovative methods for observation and data analysis.

Results of the 36th session of the CIS Interstate Council for Hydrometeorology will become the foundation for further development of the hydrometeorological service in the region. They will help increase the safety of the population and will contribute to the stable development of the economy. A number of important decisions and recommendations were adopted. They will determine priorities and directions of work for the next few years in addition to bolstering cooperation between the CIS states in this important field.
