MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – More than 44,000 national and 486 international observers monitored the presidential election in Belarus, Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Igor Karpenko said at the CEC meeting, BelTA has learned.
“The presidential campaign was monitored by 44,361 national and 486 foreign (international) observers from 52 countries, including the election observation mission of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the election observation mission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, observers from the Pan-African Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, representatives of central election authorities of 17 foreign states, as well as experts in the field of electoral law and technology. The CEC of Belarus accredited observers from 17 countries of Europe, 15 countries of Asia, 9 CIS countries, 7 countries of Africa, 4 countries of the American continent,” said Igor Karpenko.
The CEC arranged that the following documents were at the disposal of foreign (international) observers: the Constitution and the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus, a handbook for foreign (international) observers. They were translated into English. The Culture Ministry provided free visits to museums of Minsk for foreign (international) observers, while councils of deputies offered them free travel in municipal public transport on election day.
“The CEC of Belarus held bilateral meetings with delegations of election authorities of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Türkiye, Iran, the Philippines, the Republic of South Africa. During the meetings, the heads and representatives of the electoral bodies of foreign states expressed interest in cooperation during international observation, as well as in the exchange of information and electoral practices. An arrangement was reached to prepare bilateral agreements. The course of the election campaign was discussed with the heads of the CIS and SCO election observation missions. There were extended meetings with observers from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State, a delegation from the Pan-African Parliament,” added the CEC head.
